  • Is it Really Possible to Recognize Warning Signs in Advance?

Warning signs are recognized through discipline and perspective. This is the essence of crisis management. It includes being aware of potential problems and vulnerabilities that creep into businesses and can erupt into crises.

Have you ever bought a new car then begin to notice how many of those models are out on the road? It may seem like there's one at every stoplight. They go unnoticed until you become interested in them. Then, you notice virtually every one that drives by.

Crisis warning signs are similar. Without The Crisis Counselor mindset, the warning signs will likely go unnoticed through the hecticness of pressing deadlines, increased demands and ringing telephones. However, if something occurs in the business that just doesn't seem right, it allows an opportunity for someone to heed the warning and consider whether something should be done to help prevent combustion. The enlightened manager and leader recognizing vulnerabilities are like the old Fram oil filter advertising line: "You can pay me now, or pay me later." You can address the situation or problem, to possibly avoid a larger problem, or you can hope it goes away and potentially face more disastrous results in the future.

Certainly, not every vulnerability or warning sign becomes a crisis situation. But, an outstanding business includes managers and employees who believe the signs can become crises. The warning signs need to be taken seriously and provide an opportunity for someone to consider their possible short- and long-term effects.
